Having Fun in the Kitchen

Miles absolutely loves pulling up on the kitchen chairs. He makes us nervous but he can usually get down pretty well without hurting himself. He was having a good old time bouncing and laughing when I took this video.

Miles' 9 Month Portraits Preview

Last weekend I took Miles to have his picture taken. It was sort of a last-minute decision, but we've only had professional pictures taken of him one other time back when he was 6 months old. He's changed quite a bit since then! In April we'll do professional pictures again for the boys' birthdays and we'll do family pictures too.

Here's a preview of Miles' portrait session. So cute!!

Too Big For His Own Good

Beating the Winter Blues

The boys are loving the new indoor swing in the basement. Now they don't have to wait for warm weather to swing. Thanks to Grandpa Rodger for putting it up for us this past weekend!

Crib Rail Guard

Miles is almost tall enough to reach the top rail of his crib! We figured we needed something to protect those crib rails very soon.

Tyson used to be a busy beaver on his poor crib. We tried rubber bumpers but they eventually came off, and then ordered fabric bumpers but they attached with Velcro and he peeled them off the first night. I also tried some fabric ones that didn't fit the crib right. We ended up returning everything and his crib rails are all damaged. Very frustrating!

This time around I decided to make some fabric ones myself. I was itching for a trip to Jo-Ann's to find some fabric that would match Miles' room decor, but I decided to be resourceful and use some frog fleece fabric that I had leftover from a different project. I still need (want) to go to Jo-Ann's though!

I followed this tutorial and made a guard for the front crib rail using quilt batting in the middle and leftover white flannel on the underside. The only difference is that I added some zig zag topstitching to give it a quilted look and to keep the batting in place when I wash it. Oh, and I want to shorten the ties. The beauty of fleece is that it doesn't fray, so I can just go trim them while the guard is in place.

The measuring and pinning took the longest, but it was a pretty quick project and didn't turn out half bad. Time to work on the side rail guards next!

Update: I've finished the side rail guards. I was running low on frog fabric so I used matching green fleece. I'm very happy with the completed project!

I now sell these in my Mom-Made shop as well.

Can you tell this is the thumb Miles sucks?!

One Step at a Time

Miles is figuring out how to get the walker toy moving. I have a feeling it won't be long before he is taking off on his own!

Yep, Still Pureeing

Miles is still very set on me feeding him every bite, unless I put Puffs or Cheerios on his tray. Oh, and grilled cheese is acceptable too. But that's it. I had let the freezer supply go down with high hopes of transitioning him to finger foods, but back to the purees we went.

Peaches, pears, and carrots, to be exact. Before these I churned out peas, squash, and sweet potatoes. Guess I'll just keep on keepin' on...

Family Baby Photos

I wanted to compare all of our baby photos, and had to laugh while putting this together. Weren't we funny looking?!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Several weeks back I entered a drawing to win 4 tickets to see "The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Favorites" at a local performing arts center. I hadn't done much research on the show but we are big fans of the very hungry caterpillar and other books by Eric Carle, so I thought what the heck. Well, I won the tickets!!

Instead of finding a sitter for Miles and the three of us going, Tyson and I invited our friends Shauna and Isabel to come along. I meant to get a picture of all of us before the show, but we were running late because Tyson surprised me by falling asleep right when I was supposed to be waking him up for the afternoon show. Anyway, I didn't get any pictures but we did have a nice time. The show was fairly short, which was probably good for the attention span of most kids in audience. There were three stories acted out with puppets and music, with The Very Hungry Caterpillar as the finale. That was our favorite since we know the book so well. Both kids got a little antsy at times, but overall did great! Tyson wouldn't let go of his caterpillar book and plush toy during the entire performance. Here he is with them at home afterwards:

I bribed him to smile for the camera by telling him he could have his basketball back after the picture. Hey, it worked!!

And here is a clip of the performance, in case you're interested to see what it was like. It is the same show, but a different date and location.

They Really Do Love Each Other, I Swear

Yesterday Tyson woke up on the wrong side of the bed and was getting mad because Miles was grabbing him and smiling at him. Sounds terrible, right? Then things escalated and in trying to get away from him, Tyson clunked his elbow on the wall (it wasn't that bad, trust me). Is it bad that I found this whole sequence of events sort of funny and kept taking pictures?!

This is what Tyson gets for being such a stinker and always taking toys away from his baby brother. Miles will get his revenge!

Lots o' Pictures

Just wanted to share some recent photos of the boys doing their favorite things... Miles crawling and exploring, and Tyson playing basketball!

Attempting to Wave

Miles has been cracking me up today trying to wave. It's more of a straight-arm salute. I caught him on video doing it. He was also screaming at the top of his lungs (a happy scream) while I was making lunch, but he quieted down once he saw the camera phone. At the very end it's like he's saying, "look ma, no hands!"

And as for Tyson streaking by in his undies, that's an everyday occurrence around here. He always claims to be sweaty and wants to take off his shirt and pants. It's the middle of winter and snowing outside, but he is pretty hot-blooded. And shooting hundreds of baskets everyday (not much of an exaggeration) does tend to make him sweat! Heck, I get worn out just watching him.

Crawling and Pulling Up

Miles is all over the place now and into everything. He isn't the fastest crawler, but he gets to where he wants to go and then pulls up on everything possible. He is slowly learning how to get down, rather than standing there and screaming for one of us to rescue him. He is going to be the child that gives me grey hair, I think! This morning I don't know how many times I caught him or kept him from clunking his head on something. He still fell down several times and it barely phased him. He also took two "lunging" steps on his own today! He is getting so much braver. We're not ready to have a 9-month-old walker on our hands!

Here's a video of Miles crawling and standing up. He was determined to pull up on the tricycle, but couldn't quite figure out how.

Gymnastics Class

Here's a short video of Tyson's new gymnastics class. I say "new" because he has moved up to the 3-year-old class where the parents sit at the side and watch rather than participate. I wasn't sure how he would do, but I was pretty impressed for his first class. He would look over and check to make sure I was still there occasionally, but for the most part he listened to the teachers and did well. Next time I'll try to get a better video, but every time I would try, I couldn't get a good shot of him.

Tyson is in the grey shirt/pants on the end closest to the camera (at the beginning), with the bear that runs on two feet!

Finger Foods

I'm trying to get Miles to make the transition to more finger foods rather than baby food purees. He's not a big fan of the idea, apparently. I got a cheap baby food mill to try out so he can eat more of the food we're eating at meals. I don't think I was using it right the first time. I need to practice with it more - it might be quicker and easier just to dice everything up in tiny pieces. Tonight I tried giving him the chicken and sweet potato fries that we were having, but he kept making the funniest faces:

He was much happier when I was spoon-feeding him peas! Maybe one of these days he'll get used to some new flavors and textures. For now he's happy feeding himself Cheerios and Puffs, but that's about it.

Babbling & Moving

As I told Jeremy today, "ah" is soooo 2010. Miles started off 2011 with a bang by saying variations of "baba", "dada", and "mama" for the first time. It was a big day for him! Previously he said "ah!" quite a bit, sort of as a greeting, and some other unrecognizable babbling. It was so cute to hear him making new sounds today, first in his crib and then later in front of us.

Miles is also turning into quite the mover. He ventures beyond the living room on a regular basis, mainly using "the worm" to get around. He is pulling up on almost anything and loves to stand. He thinks he can walk because he will lunge for something and hope one of us catches him. He seems to be quite a bit happier now that he is mobile and can go exploring. My little man is still a mama's boy and always keeps me in his sight, but will venture around to check things out on his own now. He also cut his second front lower tooth recently, and will be 9 months old tomorrow!
