The Little Improved Desk

With our move coming up in June and several projects and upgrades swimming around in my head, furniture staining and painting could easily turn into a new hobby. ;-) Like I really need another hobby...

Anyway, I started off small, with an old desk I bought from my friend Mavis over a year ago. It's a right-handed desk, so I had planned to put it in Miles' room someday since Tyson is a lefty. It was one of those pieces that had to sit in the basement and collect dust just long enough before I got the motivation to tackle it.

What got the whole process going was when I was staging our home to sell, and wanting to refinish a couple tables in our front room. I had never stained furniture before, so this was a learning process. But it wasn't too bad. I set up a spot in our garage with the desk, end table, and coffee table. After sanding, I applied two coats of Minwax Special Walnut stain and then followed up the next day with two coats of Minwax Polycrylic to seal and protect everything.

Thanks to Liz Marie Blog for the tip on the stain color. I just love it! Check out her blog if you have a chance. It's pretty much my new favorite as far as decor goes. I would love to hire her to decorate our new house! Wonder if I could talk Jeremy into letting me put up antlers?! ;-)

Anyway, back to the desk. It really soaked up the stain since the wood was so dry to begin with! I didn't bother filling any of the crevices because I still wanted it to have that old charm. Come to think of it, I probably went a little heavy on the stain on the seat... but oh well.

There aren't any great "before" pictures of the tables, except in the background of the desk pictures above. Just imagine a worn, faded, honey orange look. I really love how the stain deepened the color and got rid of the yellow-orange hue.

This furniture staining thing is pretty fun! What I would love to do at the new house is pick up some old pieces of furniture and use chalk paint to give them a distressed look. Like this gorgeous buffet...

Of course, it might be quite awhile before I get around to doing that. Just don't be surprised if you start seeing some little before & after DIY projects popping up here on the Mom-Made blog. :-)

Happy first weekend of Spring!

Breaking the Ice

The boys made it their mission to break up as much of the remaining ice as possible today after school.

Note to self: Don't let Miles play with hammers. A simple "be careful" was not enough; he still managed to hammer his finger. It wasn't too bad though, and he was back to ice bashing using other means shortly afterwards. Goofy kids!

This past weekend I got to take pictures of our boys with their older twin cousins, who we don't get to see very often. Despite the age difference, all the boys got along great! It was crazy around our house with four boys, but they all really had a blast. We need to get these monkeys together more often...
